Find out how the CableGuardian units have been designed to ensure quick and easy installation.
EASY TO INSTALL
The CableGuardian equipment has been designed to be quick and easy to install. There are no specific competence or training requirements for personnel to install CableGuardian units and ancillary equipment into trackside locations. In addition, there are no non-standard tools or personal protective equipment (PPE) required for installation or maintenance. All installation information and operating instructions are provided in the CableGuardian Operations and Maintenance Manual.
The unit is simply fixed in a convenient position within the PSP or location case using 4 fasteners. The measurement coils are supplied with mounting brackets and have integral arrow indicators to show which direction they should be installed relative to the incoming / outgoing feeder cables.
All connections to the unit are made using connectors meaning the CableGuardian units do not need to be opened on site. The cellular aerial, if needed, is provided with a magnetic base which is simply fixed to the top of the location case with the cable fed through a suitable gromit to allow connection to the unit.
Once the CableGuardian unit has been installed, it is then switched on using the front panel isolator switch. After a short time (around 5 minutes) the unit will have downloaded its configuration from the Cloud and will be ready for commissioning. At this point, the installer can send a simple text message to the CableGuardian system which puts the unit into a short measurement mode whereby the unit checks its internal health status, takes a set of measurements and then reports this back to the installer via a text message.
The user portal is pre-configured by Viper engineering using system information obtained from a simple customer system questionnaire. The basic information required is generally available on existing feeder electrical block diagrams. GPS coordinates for the location cases to allow for the map overlay to be created are also readily obtainable from existing records or from a basic survey of the line using a GPS device.
INTEGRATION WITH OEM EQUIPMENT
We recognise that the customer’s preferred method of CableGuardian system integration will depend on a number of factors. As such we are working with system integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in addition to rail network operators to ensure that the product is compatible with existing equipment designs and that design schemes incorporating the sensor units and measurement coils are pre-engineered where practicable. Designs incorporating CableGuardian are already available from leading suppliers of DITAs, Class II retrofit backplates, and annexe cases as well as full location case designs. We have dummy sensor and coil units which can be provided to OEMs and system integrators for interface confirmation.
RETROFIT INSTALLATION ON LIVE SYSTEMS
The CableGuardian system can be installed non-intrusively (i.e. without the need to switch off the 650V power) by using spare removable 650V 2A shrouded fuse carriers available at the location.
These provide a point of isolation for the CableGuardian unit to be installed and connected before re-fitting the fuse link. Viper Innovations supply split measurement coil assemblies which can be installed without needing to disconnect and reconnect the 650V cables.
Addition of the CableGuardian system to an existing signalling power supply network is unlikely to cause an issue in terms of the additional power consumed. The power drawn by each unit is nominally 25W.
